Lyris led Bex from the safety of the barn to the large indoor arena, dodging mud puddles and some of the bigger raindrops on the way. Bex didn't like the water, and she made it clear by pressing her nose into Lyris' back and leaving it there. Every few strides the mare would snort and bump her leader, as if to say, hey, can't we go a little faster? I'm getting soaked!
Lyris knew she probably shouldn't let her mare do this, but she didn't correct it. It would likely come back to bite her in the butt eventually, but the relationship she had with the big chestnut mare was extraordinary, and Bex knew her boundaries.
They reached the safety of the indoor arena just as a jagged bolt of lightning flashed across the sky in a glorious zigzag. Bex jumped and stood stock still, careful not to run over her master while still seeking comfort. Lyris opened the arena door and hurried inside to shut it behind her, confident that her mare would follow.
Once they were inside, Lyris patted Bex's neck and undid the halter, slipping it over the mare's dainty ears and nose. Bex snorted in confusion, wondering what exactly she was doing in here without a saddle or bridle like every other time.
It's just to get you some free time, Lyris said with a chuckle. Since it's been raining so much, I thought you might like some time outside your stall.
The mare snorted again and dropped to roll in the deep sand, but stopped short when a crash of thunder boomed above their heads. She whinnied shrilly and scrambled to her feet, scattering sand and hair everywhere. Another crash, and she was tearing around the outside track, ears pinned and eyes wild. Lyris was careful to stay out of her way, but knew that she would have to calm her frightened horse down before she could take her back to the comfort of the barn. As she watched her beloved mare galloping frantically about, she thought to herself, just whose idea was this, bringing out a crazy mare in the middle of a thunderstorm?[/i]
Finally Bex tired and slowed to a bouncy trot. By this time she was covered in thick lather and dripping sweat, but she looked none the worse for wear. She snorted and dropped her head into Lyris' waiting hands and sighed.
Lyris smiled and patted the dejected-looking horse. Are you feeling a little better about this whole thunderstorm business? she asked. Bex shifted and leaned on her right hind, cocking her left foot behind her. Lyris took the halter and slid it over Bex's ears.
Let's go back inside and get you cleaned up.
