Amara had seen the fences go up. She twisted a strand of Gallants mane round her gloved fingers, before picking up her reins, trotting him in a circle, then taking him into the collecting ring. He was fizzing with excitement. She had never jumped Gallant this high, and wasn't sure if he was ready for it. She tried to block the nerves inside her. She couldn't do it properly, her face was pale and they rode in. The bell went and she let Gallant out a notch, sat deep and squeezed gently for a canter. Then flowed round the fourth fence, over the first. Amara collected gently this time, remembering the hairy turn they'd had in the previous class. She sat deep, squeezed her left leg and right rein and Gallant flowed round the courner. She'd brought him a stride out! He took off too close and knocked the rail on 2a, but it stayed up! Then Gallant tried to take a long stride to make up the groud between the fences, but he still knocked the back pole of 2b. She'd managed 4 faults in half the fences! She collected him, and brought him nimbly inside fence 9 and he cleared the 3ft 6 spread easily. Amara gasped at the power as he arched over, then she turned him in a sweeping curve towards four, which he also cleared easily. As they turned the corner to jump 5, a crisp packet rustled past, obviously dropped by a small child, and spooked him, ruining their striding to the jump. Gallant got to far away and lept. Amara didn't hear the fence get hit by his hoof, but she heard it thud to the ground and sighed.
The rest of the course went smoothly until they turned into number nine. For some reason, Gallant refused. Amara flew up his neck and trembled in shock. Gallant had never refused with her before!! So she turned him round, sat up and sat deep, shoulders back, eyes on the trees outside the arena, heels into his sides and her crop held next to his shoulder. She'd never use it unless he really deserved it, or was threatening her life, but she warned him, and it worked, he lept over it the second time. Amara patted him, and on her way out she slowed him and tried to bite back the tears that formed in her eyes. She'd never live up to her familys good standard at this rate!

score I was given; total; 12 faults in the intermediate jumping for knocking fences 2b and 5, and refusing fence 9.
