Beach Adventure

Flipping the blue ribbon in her hand Seb dropped it, allowing it to dangle from the tree branch. ”That’s about the tenth ribbon. If we cut through that patch of trees the beach is just over that slope. If we follow this trail it’ll bring us to a cave that’ll lead out onto the beach. Preferably, I’d take the slope. It would take us another ten minutes to get through the caves, considering we don’t lose each other in the poor lighting.” Opting for the slope Seb didn’t wait for Colt’s answer, already knowing he’d follow her to the sandy beach. Pushing a branch out of her way Twilight moved into a canter. Ducking low on the mares neck Seb avoided hitting any branches and pulled up as the grassy hill came into view.

Rounding over it she stopped Twilight and watched the waters lap at the edges of sand. The salty breeze wafted up on the wind and Seb took no hesitation on inhaling it deeply. She remembered when her parents hadn’t been so busy. They used to visit this beach and Seb got to see the horses. But that was many years ago, when she was young. ”So what do you think?” She didn’t want to dwell, it would lead to bad events.

Colt smiled and cantered Renji after Twilight and Seb. Wow. Its... Amazing. Ive never really been out on a beach, but it should be fun... Colts eyes lit up at the ocean breeze, and the light sun kissing the ground.

So... Want to race? Colt nudged Renji into a piaffe, one of the most beautiful movments of dressage. Harder in a jumping saddle, but Renji listened and began to toss his head at the thought of showing off to Twilight.

Seb smiled over at Colt as he took in the view. She liked it better at night but rarely got the chance to see it then. ”And the water’s always the right temperature in Spring, sometimes Summer.” Watching Renji do the piaffe Seb turned Twilight. She never did get into Dressage and Twilight had no idea on any cues Seb would have given her anyway. Moving past Colt and Renji Twilight swished her tail around in anticipation. It felt good to let out all that engery she couldn’t release in the paddocks.

Seb looked for a good point to start and stop. ”How about the log to our right as the starting point and the large outcropping rock down to the left as a stopping point? Sounds fair, even though it’s a nice distance.” Seb had no doubt that they’d be evenly matched. Renji only had the advantage because he was more powerfully built than Twilight. Moving the mare towards the log Seb scanned the beach for any potential threats.

Colt stopped Renji and walked him next to Twilight. Its wonderful.. His voice was awed. The blue haired boy got Renji collected, he had a plan for this race.

Ready? 1...2....3... He let out a breath and laughed. GO! Renji squealed, and Colt took off at a collected canter, with large strides. It seemed Twilight wasn't far behind. What a race this would be.

Seb settled Twilight just behind the log, but not an inch off the line. She readied herself as Colt counted down. It was more of Renji’s squeal than anything that made the mare go. A collected canter? Why not a gallop? Seb figured she’d take her chances, not knowing what Colt was doing, and nudged Twilight into a gallop. The feeling of the wind whipping around her caught her up into the clouds as Twilight ran, not stopping and certainly not intending to slow down.

Colt kept Renji collected, letting Renji go just a little faster. As Twilight passed him, he laughed. Twilight would only stay ahead for just a moment. As Twilight gained speed, Renji stayed just on her tail. The wind whipped at Colts face and he gave a loud whoop, as if galloping his cross-country course. The rock came closer and the two horses, mare adn stallion were neck and neck. Colt craned his head to look at Seb. Good Luck. He whispered under his breath, and let Renji go. Renji exploded with a forcefull power of gallop, leaving Twilight behind. It was almost over, but Colt knew to expect the unexpected. Twilight would probablly win.

Seb looked back for a second to see if Colt was closer than a few minutes ago. As he came up to Twilights neck she smiled, just catching his words as he let Renji have his head. Watching him speed off, Twilight pinned her ears. Young and foolish, and apparently she hated to lose. Seb hardly expected Twilight to have enough energy to catch up to Renji. As they drew closer Twilight stretched out her neck.

Seb had to wrap the reins around her wrist and grab the mares mane. She knew Twilight had some speed, but being a Lusitano didn’t give her the same type of endurance as a Thoroughbred or an Arabian. She figured she’d slow down instead of speed up. It was as much surprise to Seb as it would have been for anybody else who knew Twilight.

Twilight’s breathing was heavy as she slid to a stop just beyond the rock. Seb was unsure of who had won, or if it had been a tie. The dust and blown up sand covered their view. Opening her eyes Seb cautiously looked around to see if it was safe. ”Colt? Did you see who won?” A bit breathless and slightly shaken up Seb fell to the soft sand and looked at her horse. No need to have eyes to know that Twilight had over worked herself. Standing up Seb quickly led the mare to the water and practically had to push her in.

Feeling the cool against her hot skin Seb dove in, not worrying about the fact that she still had her clothing on. She did have a bathing suit underneath but didn’t want to waste any time in getting cool. Swimming on her back she smiled, not even worrying about the race anymore.

Actually, I didn't.. I think it was a tie! He chuckled and watched Seb jump in the water with Twilight standing in the shallower area. Colt hopped off Renji and let the big bay into the water. He threw is shirt off and dove in, letting himself feel the last rays of the sun, which was slowly sinkning behind clouds.

Seb surfaced just as Colt had dismounted Renji. Watching the bay stallion closely she swam closer to Twilight, just as reassurance. Since she didn’t know who had won, and neither did Colt, it didn’t matter so much to her. It hadn’t mattered that much in the first place but still. Looking toward the sun she smiled and watched as the sky lit up pink. Diving under she saw Colt. It was awkward so she surfaced.

Climbing up onto the rock Seb pulled off her soaked clothing. Wrinkling her nose she laid them out and sat on the warm rock with just her bathing suit. She’d get sick if she wore her wet clothes. Seb hoped they’d dry at least a bit before she rode back. Her parents would murder her if they saw her come into the house soaking wet. So protective and yet annoyingly uncaring at the same time.

”If you want to ride back you can. I want to watch the sunset first.” Seb was half hoping he’d stay. She didn’t want to watch it by herself, that’d be boring. Of course she’d have Twilight but the horse wouldn’t understand. Looking over to the mare she smiled when Twilight splashed in deeper.

Colt surfaced from the water and shook his blue hair. He saw Seb swim toward Twilight, looking half worried. Here, Ill tie Renji up just be sure. Colt swam to the surface, and walked Renji to the log. He tied him up and dove back into the water. Colt cam up for air, and laughed I'd actually love to stay for the sunset.. He lay in the water, back down, and floated, living the feeling of the breeze against his chest.

As Colt tied up Renji she was going to say not to but he had done it before she could get it out. She was worried, but Twilight could definitely stand up for herself with no problems. When he dived back in Seb looked back out to the pink clouds. It was already dark behind her. The trail would be hard to find but she knew Twilight could get her back easily. Colts voice interrupted her thinking but it didn’t bother her at all. ”Oh, glad you could stay and join me.”

Watching him float there gave her chills. Seb knew very well he wasn’t dead but it was always possibility, but she still doubted it. Standing up she dove back in, coming up for air once she had touched the sand with her fingertips. Shoving the water off her face and removing her hair from her vision she stared out at the sun as it disappeared behind the horizon. ”Why does that always happen? It always ends way too quickly.” Angry and slightly disappointed Seb floated on the water, staring at the stars aimlessly. She didn’t want to go back just yet. It would only be another night of screaming voices at her house.

As she continued to float she bumped into Colt. ”Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” Blushing, Seb looked over at Twilight she waded over and jumped up onto the bareback pad. Steering her out of the water she grabbed her clothes and stood on the bank, waiting for Colt to gather up Renji.

Because they don't want people to see the sun set, Mabye.. Colt laughed at her bitterness of missing the few seconds. It was dark out now. Seb floated into Colt and blushed. Colt looked at her. No worries, Seb... He said. She ran out of the water and grabbed hold of Twilight. He followed after, and walked on the sandy beach towards Renji. The stallion nickered and tossed his black tassles.
Leaping onto the big beast, he looked again at Seb. Twilight knows her way back right? I haven't been out on the trails in awhile...

”Maybe. I mean it’s possible.” Seb smiled lightly. She wanted to get back before her parents sent out a rescue team, if they even noticed she was still out. Feeling Twilight nibbling on her barefoot Seb stroked the mares mane. No use in scolding her, it would only make her mad. But as Colt spoke again she looked up from the dark cream color of her horse. ”Yeah. She’s pretty good at remembering trails and figures. She’ll get us back safely. Won’t you?” Laying her mane over to the one side she played with it a bit before turning Twilight back towards the hill.

Nudging her to go Twilight stood still and stared at the cave. ”Picky animal.” Letting go of the reins Twilight started a slow canter towards the cave, wanting to take the safer way than the shortcut. ”I’d try and make her go through the shortcut but then she’d throw a fit and end up going through the cave anyway, no use in fighting her instincts. So what about Renji? Does he have any sense of direction?” What a stupid question, but she wanted to know. Some horses had their sense of direction bred out of them, others had the privilege of keeping it in their bank of knowledge.

Renji has a sense of direction on Cross-Country, but on trails, not so much. He let Seb take the lead into the dark cave, knowing that Renji would follow Twilight. His trot was far behind Twi, but the noise kept the stallion interested in himself.

Twilight flicked her ears around, staying clear of anything she could run into. Every once in a while she’d stop and wait for Renji to catch up before moving on again. Once back at the barn Seb pulled a sweatshirt from her car, pulling it over her head, before rubbing Twilight down and putting her in her stall. ”Night Colt!” Waving goodbye she ran out to her car and quickly started it, smiling as the heat kicked into action. Seb waited a few minutes to see if Colt would be fine untacking alone with Renji. When she didn’t hear anything happen she left for home, well … her dysfunctional home.
