Lyris sat on the fenceboards, watching her big chestnut mare graze peacefully. Bex kept one ear cocked toward her mistress and didn't stray very far, even though the pasture was nearly an acre in size. She grazed in a slow circuit around Lyris, stopping every so often to come and lay her head in Lyris' lap.
I miss the saddle, too, girl, Lies said at one point. But I've still got a few weeks left with this cast, and then a brace, and then I can ride. GOD I miss it. Bex snorted and swished her tail at an early fly, watching as Lyris pulled out a carrot piece from the breast pocket of her polo. They shared the piece in quiet contentment.
Suddenly Lyris leapt down from the fence, into the paddock. Bex stared at her calmly. I know I'm not supposed to be doing this, she said as she walked to her mare's side, but I have to. Easy, girl. In her left hand she gathered a bit of Bex's mane, and laid her casted right over the mare's back. She then patted the horse with her right hand and sprang lightly astride. Bex stood quietly, looking around at her master as if to say Welcome back, but should you really be doing this?
Lyris laughed and leaned forward to hug Bex around the neck tightly. It's no big deal, you silly lug. I'm just going to sit here while you graze. Sightsee, that sort of thing. It's too nice out to be inside. She leaned back onto Bex's rump, crossed her arms behind her head, and sighed happily. The sun's rays warmed her skin and she closed her eyes with a smile.
